Going Candid by Thomas Leuthard
Going Candid by Thomas Leuthard is a free ebook about one person’s take on street photography. It is a beautiful ebook – and believe me that is not a contradiction in terms. The photography is wonderful, the author, Thomas Leuthard has a superb eye of that there can be little doubt. Thomas gives a very personal account of what makes a good street photographer with loads of suggestions and full acknowledgement of just how difficult it is for most people to get over the hurdle of shoving a camera where it is sometimes not welcome.
He is not an equipment fetishist which is extremely refreshing but does point out the important factors to consider when choosing a camera such as focusing speed, advantages of prime lenses, benefits of a small camera etc. One thing he doesn’t do is wax lyrically about Leica’s for page after page – something that street photographers are known to do on occasions. In fact, he doesn’t even own a Leica. Thomas does emphasize the importance of knowing the camera and practicing with it.
The book is written with a very light touch and the sections are short, this is no dry academic treatise about aesthetics. The author clearly intends an outward focus with the onus being on helping the person new to this type of photography.
If you have ever been curious about street or candid photography this book is a must. It is over a hundred pages, the images are superb, very clean in both composition and editing. It is a self contained work, not a teaser or advertisement for a paid product. The author makes a living in IT so made the decision to make the book available for free. He does write about the commercial side of photography and how to ‘make it’ as a photographer so is aware of the exposure benefits of putting out a high quality free ebook. Even so this one is definitely win/win.
