Housekeeping – A Meta Dump
I am not a fan of meta. Meta is bloggers talking about their blog rather than the subject of the blog. However I have some meta that needs dealing with and I’ve decided to regurgitate it all in one big dollop rather than have little bits of meta turning up between the substantive posts. I hope you don’t mind and I will not be offended if you wander off. Be warned though. there may just be some useful stuff here.
Low Cost High Impact Photography eBook
Launch schedule and pricing:
The official launch is still set for the 8th of March. Until then it can be purchased for a very reasonable $5 simply by subscribing to the email list or the newsletter. It will be on sale for $11.75 at launch and then at its full price of $19.95 one week after launch day which by my math is the 15th March. Bottom line is that the sooner it is purchased the cheaper it is!
This page, which I’ll keep at the top of the homepage until the 15th of March has all the details along with a free 23 page sample and will be kept updated.
Thanks to everyone who has provided feedback so far. I’ve been blown away by how friendly and positive it has been. Some are even putting the suggestions in the book to the test and so far so good apparently. I will be doing a final revision and I’ll be incorporating a few of the suggestions. Nothing major just a few tweaks here and there.
I have now set up the e-junkie affiliate stuff and will be emailing out instructions to everyone who has agreed to do a review and those who have contacted me via email.
I am still looking for about 10 more reviewers – if you have a website to put a review on and want a free copy of the book contact me using this form providing the url of your web site. You don’t have to have a huge busy website to participate in this and it doesn’t have to be a photography web site. Minimalism, frugality, lifestyle, tech and many other types would all work.
Of course you don’t have to write a review to become an affiliate (although reviews are great for increasing sales). Again contact me using the above form if interested and I’ll send the specific link or sign up directly at E-junkie.
A couple of quick notes while I’m on the subject:
The commission at 55% rather than the previously announced 50%.
Please don’t make the link live before the 8th March 2011. I would recommend writing your article then just leaving it in draft form until the 8th. The official launch will be at 9.00AM US CT.
Discussion and Comments
I’ve been having an internal debate for a couple of months now about whether to make this next announcement or not. There are definitely potential pluses and minuses but things are now at the stage where it doesn’t really seem fair not to.
There is very little discussion here about the posts but there is a lot of discussion somewhere else. Allow me to explain:
This is my own personal blog but I do put the majority of them up on another site, namely Daily Kos. You may be aware that Daily Kos is primarily a progressive political blog. This is one of the potential minuses as I have been worried about alienating readers who may have a different political outlook than I do. I have hinted at my politics in passing here here but not explicitly stated them. At least to the best of my knowledge.
The discussion threads on my posts on Daily Kos are anywhere between about 40 and 200 comments. Discourse is generally very polite and by and apolitical. The more lively political debate occurs elsewhere on the site. I use the comments to expand on the main post and to answer any questions that arise. Other people post their own thoughts and often their own images. Discussion is very lively but also very cordial.
Here is an example: Photography Gear Addiction with a wide assortment of comments.
Here are the index pages as it were, where all of the cross-posted articles are listed. I will probably provide links directly from the posts on this site to the copy on the Daily Kos site but I want to think that one through a little more as there are search engine issues involved. I will put the link to the index on Daily Kos on the sidebar of this site – that should be a workable compromise. Everything that I post on the Daily Kos site can be found in these index pages.
I also administer a group blog within the Daily Kos setup called: The Medium and the Message this is a space for more analytical posts by myself and others. I posted yesterday’s article about Stieglitz to this group for example. This is a good place for historical and philosophical photography writing. Other Recent posts not by me are on subjects such as a celebration of Ansel Adam’s birthday, an article about photographing people as a part of political activism and a piece about William Eggleston.
Just to make clear, this blog, Minimalist Photography 101, is going to carry on exactly as before.
Odds and Ends
I will get around to writing the newsletter that I keep promising. Personally I like subscribing to sites by email and that is the method I’d recommend for this site. That way nothing gets missed.
Any questions or suggestions for this site please don’t hesitate to contact me
I put a lot of photographs on my Flickr stream – this really is an ongoing visual journal of stuff that catches my interest.
I also have a Flickr group allied to this blog – it is a newish group and currently has a membership of around 20. Scroll down to the bottom of this page and see the images? Those are the most recent posts to the group.
If you’ve got this far well done and I do promise that the next post will be about an aspect of photography. Posts about modernist photographer Paul Strand, scale and texture are in the pipeline.
