MP101 Update – I’ll Throw My Toys if I Want To.
This is just a quick update for anyone who is thoroughly confused by the changes here over the past couple of months. This post from a few days ago provides the background.
Feeding the posts through from Google plus seems to be working. Visitor numbers here are way up though I haven’t done a proper analysis yet. To be honest, I like the idea of multiple short posts a day, often just a photograph or a photograph and a sentence. This seems more akin to the original ethos behind the weblog – a fairly random collection of stuff and a few thoughts from the blogger. The precision crafted gems with search engine friendly phrases and words and market researched topics always grated. The marketers managed to turn something that should have been fun into work and Google assisted them in this process. Well, as from now, this blog is going back to the old model. It will be a little messy, conversations may appear to start in the middle and links may not always be where expected. All the older stuff will still be here and no doubt I will post essays and how-to’s at some point in the future but I really do want to reign back the set piece stuff and focus more on the impromptu and spontaneous. My photography is a process, a journey and I want this blog to reflect that. I am not handing down pearls of carefully honed wisdom but rather saying hey this worked for me (or not in many cases) you may find it useful/amusing/a pleasant distraction etc.
One thing is for sure – I am never going to test for keywords ever again. If I get search engine traffic great, if not I am not going to lose any sleep over it. I will be making my titles exactly as search engine unfriendly as I feel like at the time. I will not be loading up the first paragraph with keywords or losing sleep over the percentage number of times the key phrase is inserted into the post. I also don’t really care if my headings are nested in the wrong order or my links are properly optimized. I will care about how the site is from the user’s point of view albeit with allowances for the new looser approach. If this paragraph makes no sense at all to you – don’t worry – I sincerely hope that it never does as your life will be a happier one if you never need to know or understand the guff that underpins it.
You may have noticed that comments have started to mysteriously appear, they, by and large are ported over from the duplicate posts on Google Plus. I have always had great discussions about photography and just about everything else but never here for some reason. Don’t get me wrong there have been some excellent wonderfully thoughtful comments left here but they have been rare. On a technical note, if you leave a comment here, it won’t appear on the Google Plus site. If you leave one on the Google Plus site it will appear here. Clear as mud I know but trust me, there is a thread of logic in there somewhere. It is well worth clicking through to the comments in many cases as they often contain useful information about the image or article (as well as lots of other stuff).
Things are still evolving so they could change here very quickly. I’ll post updates whenever anything major is afoot and often when minor things, or a collection of minor things happen. Feel free to ask any questions, either in the comments or via the contact form – whatever you are most comfortable with.
In the spirit of this blogs new found freedom I am going to publish this without revision or edit – because I can!
